Lot Essay

The four-masted iron ship Romsdal was built on the Clyde by R. Steele of Greenock for J.A. Allan of Glasgow and launched in 1877. Ordered for the Indian jute trade, she was registered at 1,887 tons gross and measured 276 foot in length with a 41 foot beam. After numerous ocean passages plying her trade to Adelaide, Rangoon, Chittagong, Calcutta and San Francisco, she foundered on the 2nd November 1891 in a tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Bengal, whilst returning from Chittagong.
