The iron screw steamship Bothal, measured at 1,908 tons gross, was built by C.S. Swan & Co. at Wallsend on the Tyne and launched on 20th March 1878 for Arkless, Bell & Co. of Newcastle. The company became R. Bell & Co. in 1880, and she is seen here flying Bell's distinctive house flag emblazoned with a blue bell, and 'making her number' RVHP. R. Bell & Co. sold Bothal in 1899 and she was lost in the Bay of Biscay in 1902 while carrying a cargo of coal from Glasgow to Savona.
