Lot Essay

The Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo premiered Bogatyri in New York in 1938. A ballet in five acts, the story is based on legendary tales of Vladimir the Great, including battles between the Bogatyri and the Tartars. The ballet was set to music by Borodin and choreographed by Léonide Massine. Costumes and sets for this production were designed by Natalia Goncharova. The current work represents two costume designs for tartar maidens in attendance on the Kahn's wife.
