A Nagasaki Lacquer Tea Caddy
Edo Period (19th century)
The rectangular box with hinged cover opening to reveal two caddies lined in silver foil with sliding covers, the black lacquer ground inlaid in finely cut mother-of-pearl with flowers and foliage and a central oval panel to the cover depicting buildings in a lakeside landscape; and another box and cover in the form of a tea caddy with a black lacquer ground, the exterior with bonsai and various other flower and Buddhist utensils
