Sir Simon Hornby was once described as a "latter day embodiment of Renaissance man" who pursued many passions, as well as being in a fortunate position to inherit a family role in the firm WH Smith in 1958, eventually to become it's chairman between 1982 to 1994. Subsequently he held an extraordinary range of appointments and trusteeships with various institutions, including: Lloyds, Pearsons, the National Trust, the V&A Museum, the Design Council and most significantly the presidency of the Royal Horticulture Society from 1994 to 2000. At The Ham, Sir Simon Hornby transformed his garden to create an arborists' utopia along the river bank; he had inherited a knowledgeable interest in horticulture and an eye for design from Geoffrey Jellicoe. His knowledge of the arts was regarded as exceptional, with a keen eye for quality and a deep scholarly knowledge he assembled a collection of modern watercolours and fine porcelain. At The Ham, Sir Simon and Sheran Hornby's stylish manner of entertaining was legendary, surrounded by the beautiful gardens and a selection of the lots offered in this sale.
