Lot Essay

Landelle registered at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on 2 October 1837 as the pupil of Paul Delaroche and made his debut at the Salon in 1841. His early work alternated between sentimental religous works, and studies of pretty girls in pastoral settings of which this is a delightful example. Landelle was patronised by Emperor Napoleon III.
