AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED EYE-CUP (TYPE A)
WORKSHOP OF NIKOSTHENES, CIRCA 545-540 B.C.
Each side of the exterior with right-facing profile side-by-side busts between eyes, one side with a warrior, perhaps Ares, and a bearded man, the warrior with long hair, his eye painted, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet adorned with a laurel wreath, and a chiton patterned with X's, the man with a red beard and a fillet, his eye incised; the other side with a warrior, perhaps Ares, and a youth, the warrior with long hair, his eye painted, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and a chiton patterned with stopt meanders, the youth with his eye incised, each adorned with a laurel wreath; a siren below each handle with her head turned back; alternating black and outlined rays above the foot, a broad red band enclosed within thin bands above the rays, a red fillet at the join of the stem to the bowl, the side of the foot reserved, thin concentric bands on the underside, a dotted circle in the tondo; details in added red and white
