A BYZANTINE BRONZE POLYCANDELON
CIRCA 5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
Composed of a ring with six circular openings for the insertion of lamps, openwork rosettes in between, three rosettes with loops connecting three chains to the bottom arm of a central cross decorated with incised dotted circles on either side, the flaring horizontal arms each terminating in projecting disk finials at the corners, two S-shaped hooks attached to the lower disks on the arms, the cross hanging from a short chain attached to a large suspension hook
17½ in. (44.5 cm.) high
