MARGAUX
Margaux is the southernmost of the commune appellations in the Médoc as well as the largest. The communes eponymous château is its only first growth, and is considered to be not only the finest Margaux, but one of the best wines produced anywhere in the world. The château itself is located on the eastern edge of the village, near the river, and it is due to this favorable location that it owes its dominance. Much of the vineyard land is located here as well, although there are parcels to the north and west of the village as well. Located very close to Margaux and sharing in its glory at the top of the Margaux appellation is Château Palmer, located just to the south of Margaux in the village of Cantenac. That it is classified as a third growth is an accident of history, for in the right years, Palmer can contend as the wine of the vintage.
