Lot Essay

His large work, Misty Snow (Lot 2148),reveals Hong Ling's extraordinary achievement in landscape oil painting; a mature work showing his transition from slavish reproductions of Nature to the expression of spirituality in natural landscape. This composition depicts trees covered by snowflakes at night, creating a misty beauty resembling a land of immortals. By the deliberate reduction of clear brush strokes these delicate contours perceptively delineate a large cluster of trees in the midst of falling snowflakes. Spots of color have been sprinkled over the composition to achieve the "po" effect of traditional Chinese landscape painting, and increase the sense of spatial depth. The intermingling of oil paints ingeniously conveys the sense of innate strength and abstraction found in ink-splash works. Hong Ling has transcended the objective description of phenomenon and interposed his own subjective definition of seasons by means of color. The landscape, trees, and rocks are depicted in a natural and harmonious fashion, and the constantly changing glow created by light on the landscape has been eliminated. A memory of the moment is transformed into an eternal impression, and the true and beautiful nature of the object is revealed. The texture of oil paint in Autumn Scene (Lot 2149) is expressed through a few, rapid and rhythmic strokes. The yellow leaves and resilient tree branches in the autumn combine to create a carefully arranged structure. The brush strokes are scattered freely in all directions, signifying both the energy and rhythm of Nature, as well as the inner feelings of the artist. It conveys the zest of the highly cursive script style of traditional Chinese calligraphy.
