Lot Essay

This calligraphy couplet comes from the collection of General Zhang Fakui (1896-1980). A native Hakka, Zhang was the Second Lieutenant General in the army of the Nationalist Party of China. During his successful military career, he was Group Army Commander-in-Chief, Army Corp Commander-in-Chief, and Military Region Commander-in-Chief respectively. After the war, Zhang was put in charge of Guangdong province in 1947 and subsequently was appointed commander-in-chief of the Nationalist ground forces in March 1949. Zhang later retired and moved to Hong Kong. General Zhang Fakui's collection also includes 18 modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy, to be offered in our Fine Chinese Modern Paintings auction on 29 May 2012.
