Lot Essay

Indonesian multi-disciplinary artist Tommy Tanggara specialises in developing artworks with a combination of iconic and realistic details. The artist's body of works can be compared to a journey through the development of Indonesian visual art, covering the styles developed from a variety of movements such as realism, surrealism, cubism, abstraction and others.

In White Heart (Lot 2474), Tommy Tanggara offers a new visualisation technique and perspective. The arrows infer a host of richly enchanting symbols and metaphors, referencing of course Cupid and his bow and arrows, but also the more ephemeral associations of ambition, progression and personal direction. White Heart comes from Tommy Tanggara's well-received King's Heart series which simultaneously captures the imagination of viewers with its universal symbolism of the heart piereced by numerous arrows, and also expands the range of large-scale installed objects within the Indonesian art scene.
