Lot Essay
The present portrait cup of Napoleon I and the following lot, a portrait of Empress Josephine, are likely the pair found in the factory salesroom records for 1839. It is interesting to compare these later examples with similar production dating to the reign of the emperor, for example the service made for Napoleon and painted with portraits of his second wife sold Christie's, New York, 21 October 2010, lot 642.
Although one would expect the saucer for this portrait cup of the Emperor to also be painted with a topographical view, the decorative vocabulary on both cups and the borders of both saucers is identical. There are, however, tiny differences in the execution, with elements found in platinum on one appearing in gold on the other.
