Lot Essay

The canapé in the Lehman suite would have been designed to be placed against the walls, with its flowing, asymmetrical carving serving as a perfect complement and reflection of the carved boiserie. The designer Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750) illustrates this concept in a 1735 engraving of a related canapé reproduced here.
