Lot Essay
Léonard Abel Schilt was a figure painter from the great dynasty of Schilt, active since 1818 at Sèvres. He is recorded at the national manufactory in the years 1877-1878 and 1891-1893. Schilt also maintained an independent atelier in Paris and was a noted Salon and Exposition exhibitor throughout the late 19th century.
In the archival records at Sèvres for the Republican years 1877-1879, there are only two vases of this form noted. They both enter the salesrooms on July 1878, (Registre Vv8, folio 63, no. 94) and are described as deux vases Feuille d'eau fond bleu décor en or cartels de figures. The price listed in the margin was 1900/3800 francs. Subsequently, the two vases are listed in the sales ledgers on December 1878, (Registre Vaa 4, folio 281) as acquired by Monsieur Maeda.

Comparative examples of this form, painted by Paul Marie Roussel, were exhibited at the International Exhibition, London 1862 and were later a gift from Napoleon III to a top ranking official. One of the pair is now conserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, Inv. 1993.6.a & b, the other by The Art Institute Chicago.
Another smaller pair of this form, painted by Madame Henriette Faraguet was sold Christie's, New York, 21 October 2008, lot 99. In April of 1860, this pair was a gift from the Emperor Napoleon III to the heiress Baroness Burdett-Coutts.
