Lot Essay

Three similar examples are known - one formerly in the collection of Elizabeth Parke Firestone, sold Christie's, New York, 21 & 22 March 1991, lot 179; another in the collection of the Museo degli Argenti, Florence, published by S. Eriksen and G. de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, Vincennes and Sèvres 1740-1800, London, 1987, p. 277, no. 92 and also French Porcelain in Palazzo Pitti, Florence, 1973, p. 35, no. 4.; and a third which retains its cover in the Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City, published by T. Préaud and A. d'Albis, La Porcelaine de Vincennes, Paris, 1991, p. 160, no. 138.

The gilding found on the present pot is typical of the high quality of chased gold work produced at Vincennes in the early years of the factory. The heart-shaped cartouche issuing sprays of flowers entwined on trellis is also typical of this period of production.

For a comparable cup and saucer previously in the collections of Burton-Jones, Dr. Henry A. Chase, and Dan Mingeldorf-Richard Mitchell, now in an anonymous private collection, see Sotheby's, New York, 20 May 1989, lot 69. For a similar water jug, see Christie's, London, 12 May 2010, lot 210.
