A FINE AND RARE BLUE AND WHITE AND IRON-RED 'DRAGON' DISH
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
The interior is decorated in underglaze blue and iron-red with a leaping scaly five-clawed dragon amidst ruyi clouds and flame scrolls, its body enclosing a 'flaming pearl'. The pattern is repeated on the exterior as a frieze of two striding dragons.

Lot Essay

This dish is decorated with a frontal dragon on the interior fashioned after Ming prototypes. A Jiajing-marked blue and white dish with a similar design of dragons is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (II), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2000, p. 125, pl. 115.
