A FINE AND RARE DOUCAI DISH
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)
The dish is potted with shallow rounded sides rising to an everted rim, the centre of the interior finely painted with a mythical horse galloping over a stormy sea of wind-tossed waves breaking against craggy blue rocks. The mythical beast is shown with a ribbon-tied book set atop a blanket draped over its back, all below a band of scrolling clouds on the everted rim. The exterior is detailed with further swirling waves divided at the four cardinal points by a blue rock.

Lot Essay

A similar dish with a gilded edge to the rim in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, no. 218. A similar dish without the gilded edge in the Chang Foundation is illustrated by J. Spencer, Selected Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, Taipei, 1990, no. 140; and another from the Edward T. Chow Collection was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 May 1981, lot 560. Compare also with two examples, each with a gilt mouth rim, the first sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2005, lot 1377 and the second, also at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2011, lot 2934.
