Jade carvings of this distinctive form flourished following the revival of archaism during the Qianlong period, alongside an abundant supply of fine jade from the Xinjiang area. A taller vessel with very similar design to the present lot, and another with four loose rings and dragon designs, are in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, Shijiazhuang, 1991, vol. 6, pls. 153-154. A lobed example with two rings and chilong motifs was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3563.
