Beside me, my friend François-Paul - who was exhibiting his new brand for the first time - was sharing his frustration at being largely unknown to the public despite the many complicated timepieces he had created for famous brands over the years. At that pre-internet time, the vast majority of Independent watchmakers were completely unknown. I was in my second year running Harry Winston Timepieces and suggested, "If we developed a watch together, Harry Winston could help promote your talent", Journe thought about it, agreed and in 2001 we presented the Opus One. The rest as they say is history. That simple act of one man helping another by transparently crediting his value was just good ethics, but it significantly changed the horological landscape. Today, twelve years and twelve pieces later, Opus is still the ultimate revelator of exciting new horological talent. Many Opus watchmakers went from total obscurity to worldwide celebrity, a transition which was sometimes more difficult than creating the complex watch itself. Every Opus is a window into a watchmaker's talent, ambitions, doubts, empathy and strength of character. An Opus is much, much more than a timepiece; it represents an extraordinary human adventure. Maximillian Büsser Owner & Creative Director MB & F The Opus Collection; Eight Contemporary Works of Art opus/?p??p?s/Noun: 1.A separate composition or set of compositions by a particular composer, usually ordered by date of publication. 2.Any artistic work, esp. one on a large scale. When Ronald Winston succeeded his father in 1978 as the head of one of the most respected and world-renowned jewellers in the world, he could very well have rested on his laurels. Instead, the younger Winston decided to create his own legacy - by projecting his scientific background as a chemical engineer as well as a researcher at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on to the business. He filed patents, invented machines for cutting diamonds and devised experimental alloys of precious metals. In 1989, fuelled by his enthusiasm for innovative technology and his deep-rooted passion for high-end horology, Ronald Winston decided to launch his first line of watches, a new milestone for the jewellery house. The underlying philosophy of this watch line was to combine Harry Winston's legendary search for quality and excellence with Ronald Winston's own vision of cutting-edge creativity and audacious originality. Instead of competing with watch manufacturers with hundreds of years of history, Ronald Winston opted for imagination, ingenuity and adventure. This bold combination culminated in the creation of the first Harry Winston watch and the world's first double retrograde perpetual calendar, commissioned from two independent Swiss watchmakers Jean-Marc Wiederrecht and Roger Dubuis. The road for Harry Winston to venture into the high end watch market was not without obstacles. Never one to turn his back on a challenge, Ronald Winston was more intent than ever to put Harry Winston - a jeweller - on the map of the finest high end timepieces. To this end, in 1998, he appointed Maximilian Büsser, a 31 year old Swiss national who had spent the previous 7 years at Jaeger Lecoultre, to become Managing Director of Harry Winston Rare Timepieces. When Maximilian B?sser who is half Swiss and half Indian was asked in an interview to describe himself, he said "A half of me: the perfectionist, organizer, engineer, rational thinker. The Indian half is more of a dreamer, emotional creator, passionate, out-of-the-box thinker." Büsser could have been describing the qualities of Ronald Winston himself and each of the master watchmakers who partnered with the brand on the singly most innovative initiative in horological history in the 21st century - the creation of the Opus series that B?sser masterminded in 2001 and which finally established the brand's reputation in the haute horlogerie arena. The word "Opus" speaks volumes about the concept which references a composition or a set of compositions or any artistic work. B?sser's idea was deceptively simple but brilliantly daring. He continued Ronald Winston's vision of working with independent watchmakers, however, he increased the stakes by associating the brand's legendary name, in equal partnership, with a group of young and highly talented horologists to produce a limited series of revolutionary, extremely rare, one-of-a-kind timepieces each year. Breaking the traditional client/supplier relationship which governs the Swiss watch industry, the two partners work together as equals and in total symbiosis, both receiving the same recognition as the names of Harry Winston and that of the watchmaker appear alongside the dial and movement of each timepiece. Each Opus, true to its definition, is a veritable artistic composition. Every year since 2001 to the present day, one master watchmaker is given the exciting opportunity to create his magnum opus, a chance to redefine and reconstruct the perception of time. Although the project is a dream-come-true for an independent watchmaker - to be given carte blanche to create a rare and unique timepiece in an extremely limited edition - it is at the same time a formidable challenge. In the relatively short time frame of one year or less, the watchmaker has to bring to fruition a timepiece that not only reflects his own particular style of watch-making, but pushes the boundary of haute horologerie to new heights, with ground-breaking design and mechanism while at the same time upholding Harry Winston's legendary craftsmanship, attention to detail and individuality. Christie's is honored to present you with the largest collection on Harry Winston Opus watches to have ever been offered on the market and to share the passion of their makers.

Born in 1957, Francois-Paul Journe is a French watchmaker who began training at the watchmaker's school in his native city of Marseilles at the age of fourteen. He went on to complete his studies in Paris in 1976 before training with his uncle whose restoration workshops in Paris looked after major state and private horological collections. It was here that Francois-Paul Journe discovered the most striking timepieces in the history of watchmaking, particularly from the 18th century, commonly known as the golden age of horology. His fascination for the works of Abraham-Louis Breguet and Antide Janvier formed the basis of his research and creative process and inspired him to complete his first constant-force tourbillon pocket watch in 1982. After setting up as an independent watchmaker in Paris in 1985, he built specially commissioned pocket watches and clocks for a select few. clock. He went on to open a workshop in Switzerland manufacturing movements for other brands.

The genesis of Opus 1 started as a story of friendship between Francois-Paul Journe and Maximilian Busser, then Managing Director of Harry Winston Rare Timepieces. A chance encounter on an escalator during Basel Fair between the two friends led to the beginning of the Opus adventure with Francois-Paul Journe and Harry Winston creating in collaboration 18 one-of-a-kind timepieces. For this series, Francois-Paul Journe took inspiration from the first unique timepiece that he created in 1978 - a remontoir constant-force tourbillon pocket watch based on the work of the legendary Abraham-Louis Breguet and produced three movements - the 5-day Automatic, the Resonance Chronometer and the Tourbillon. Each of the three movements is produced in a limited edition of 6 with dials in 6 different colours, with the cases of some of the pieces set with diamonds. Each watch is therefore a unique example combining a technically advanced movement with a visually stunning dial and a transparent back. Referring to the collection of Opus 1, Francois-Paul Journe said, "It is a great honour for me to collaborate with the great Harry Winston, I receive a valuable experience and the people who obtain this Opus, receive the combination of the highest technology and the finest jewellery. The one word to describe this Opus is Adventure."

On offer in the sale is the 5 day automatic chronometer. It is equipped with an automatic movement which maintains the watch's precision for five days without it being worn as well as a power reserve of 120 hours. This unique example has a turquoise dial with a large display of date, hours, minutes and small seconds and is the only one in the limited edition of 6 with a case set with diamonds.
