TWO LARGE EGYPTIAN PAPYRUS FRAGMENTS FROM CHAPTER XCII OF THE BOOK OF THE DEAD, written in hieroglyphics in vertical columns
[northern Egypt, probably XXVIth Dynasty, c. 550 B.C.]
Fragment 1: 125 x 127mm, fragment 2: 104 x 147mm. 16 lines of small hieroglyphics, without rules, written in black ink from left to right on coarse dark papyrus, indicating a northern Egyptian, rather than Theban, localisation, fragment 1 beginning with Chapter XCII.5, with traces of the bottom of two previous columns, and continuing to XCII.16. Fragment 2 displays a variety of textual similarities to fragment 1 in columns 5-6.
'THE CHAPTER OF OPENING THE TOMB TO THE SOUL AND SHADOW OF A MAN, SO THAT HE MAY COME FORTH AND MAY GAIN POWER OVER HIS LEGS'. Khaib-t, or 'shade', otherwise found only in Chapter XCII of the Papyrus of Ani, appears here in both fragments.
