Volume III only, 2° (480 x 315mm). Text in French, mounted on guards throughout. Engraved architectural title with letterpress overslip, 66 engraved maps, of which 63 double-page, one single page and 2 in the text, coloured in outline by a [?]later hand. (Lacking the letterpress part-title to the British Isles, light marginal dampstain to title extending through to first three maps, tiny marginal worming to tail of guards and just into main leaves of title and first map.) Contemporary mottled calf, panelled in blind (extremities rubbed, headcap defective with associated short split to upper joint, corners bumped). Provenance: Henry Nassau, Count of Auverquerque (1641-1708; ink inscription on title) -- [?]Allvin (early ink inscription on title).

FIRST EDITION of this copy of volume III of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in French. The present lot is without the Appendice of 24 maps sometimes found with this edition, but contains the four maps of the British Isles with odd signatures. These were added to the three-volume edition in anticipation of volumes IV (England) and V (Scotland and Ireland). Van der Krogt 2:211.3C.
