ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo de. Teatro della Guerra contro il Turco. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, 1687 [but c. 1688].

2° (483 x 300mm). Engraved title and 36 engraved double-page plates on guards (comprising 34 of the 39 maps called for by Shirley and 2 extra maps). (Occasional soiling, small marginal repairs and a few stains, 2 maps repaired to lower margin not affecting plate.) 19th-century quarter calf, new endpapers (extremities rubbed, spine chipped, heavily at tail).

FINE ENGRAVINGS COMMEMORATING THE DEFEAT OF SULTAN MEHMED IV in various European theatres. The maps and views are finely engraved, possibly by Vincenzo Mariotti who signed the title-page and who was one of the engravers currently working on maps for Rossi's Mercurio Geografico. RARE. ABPC/AE online record only two copies at auction. WorldCat gives 3 locations only: at the Bibliothéque Nationale de France, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and Brown University. There is some discrepancy between copies, with the BSB copy calling for 39 plates, and the Atabey copy with a map of Hungary not present here nor apparently in the Brown copy. Shirley mentiones 33 portraits preceding the maps and views which are not present in this and other copies. Shirley BL, T.ROSS-2a.
