WILLMOTT, Ellen Ann (1858-1934). The Genus Rosa ... Drawings by Alfred Parsons R.A. London: John Murray, 1914.
2 volumes, 2° (375 x 275mm). 132 chromolithographic plates, 15 monochrome plates, full-page illustrations, all after Parsons. Contemporary brown half morocco, spines gilt in compartments, top edges gilt (extremities a little rubbed). Provenance: Morris Francis Yorke (bookplate) -- W.A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey (booklabel).
Originally issued in parts between 1910 and 1914, the Genus Rosa is a monument to Ellen Willmott's 'imperial heyday' at Warley Place, near Brentwood, Essex, where she employed as many as eighty-five gardeners. The plates are all after Alfred Parson's paintings of plants in the richly-stocked garden, and the Latin and and English descriptions are mostly by the Kew botanist John Gilbert Baker. Nissen BBI 2166. (2)
