FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL CLOTH, describing the most daring of Burton's journeys. He was the first English Christian to enter Mecca freely as a Muslim pilgrim (travelling in disguise as an Afghan Pathan) and the first European to travel between the Holy Cities by the eastern route. On reaching Mecca he performed all the rituals of the Hajj. 'Getting out of it with a whole skin' was considered a notable feat. But he was profoundly affected by the experience and on return to London formed a company enabling pilgrims to reach Mecca more easily: 'The Hadjilik, or Pilgrimage to Mecca, Syndicate, Limited.' Penzer p. 43-50; Casada 53; Spink 7. (3)
