FRITH, Francis (1822-1898). Egypt and Palestine photographed and described. London: James S. Virtue, [1858-1859].

2 volumes, 2° (435 x 307mm). 76 mounted albumen prints. (Some fading of prints, variable spotting to plate margins, occasionally heavy, some waterstaining at top margins.) Contemporary green half morocco, gilt edges (covers a little soiled and discoloured).

FIRST EDITION OF FRITH'S EARLIEST WORK. Originally issued in parts to subscribers, it was the product of three journeys made to the Middle East between 1856 and 1859. Journeying up the Nile and subsequently to Palestine and Syria, Frith 'took pioneering photographs of the landscape and of monuments, often under dangerous and difficult conditions. He slept in tombs and caves and was attacked by wild dogs and brigands.' He travelled with a very large camera (16 x 20in.) and worked 'inside an unventilated tent ... in desert temperatures with collodion chemicals that were prone to boil on the glass-plate negatives' (ODNB). Blackmer 1942. (2)
