8° (215 x 169mm). With the final blank. Lithographic frontispiece by E. W. Kemble, photographic portrait frontispiece of the bust of Mark Twain by Karl Gerhardt, numerous illustrations in the text. (Some light soiling and occasional spotting mostly in the margins.) Original pictorial green cloth stamped in gold and black, housed in a custom-made green morocco-backed clamshell case by Asprey (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Mrs O.B. Abbott, Oriskany Falls, New York (pencilled signature).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 'ALL MODERN AMERICAN LITERATURE COMES FROM ONE BOOK BY MARK TWAIN CALLED HUCKLEBERRY FINN' (Ernest Hemingway, in The Green Hills of Africa). A very good copy in the original cloth; an early issue with the following points: first state of the frontispiece; 'was' for 'saw' on p.57; the list of illustrations showing 'Him and another Man' as appearing on p.88; the title is a cancel with the copyright dated 1884; p.283 a cancel; with the final blank.
