Original grey cloth stamped in Federal blue, original illustrated dust-jacket; later grey leather-backed clamshell case (front hinge splitting, cloth spotted and browned, some wear at spine ends, newspaper clipping pasted on front free endpaper, dust-jacket with long tears at the flap folds, front flap clipped at the top, small chips along edges, small chip on spine panel near fold, light soiling). FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'To Elizabeth S. Harsh from Margaret Mitchell'. Mitchell's epic Civil War novel was a huge success: it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, sold more than 8 million copies, and has been translated into at least 18 languages. The film adaptation starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland won the Oscar for best picture in 1939.
