2 volumes, 8° (180 x 115mm). (Light spotting on the edges.) Original green printed wrappers; together in custom-made green cloth clamshell case (the price on the back cover of vol. 1 changed to '1200' in manuscript, small dampstain on the inside back cover of vol. 2).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the printed price 'Francs: 900' on the back covers. Nabokov's still controversial masterpiece was rejected by several American and British publishers, before being taken-on by Maurice Girodias's deliciously louche Olympia Press. Following publication in 1955, Nabokov defended his 'serious work of art' to friends and publishers: 'I know Lolita is my best book so far'. The British Home Office ordered all copies entering the UK to be seized, and lobbied the French government so that, surprisingly, Lolita was also banned in France for nearly two years.
