WALTON, Izaak (1593-1683) -- RACKHAM, Arthur (1867-1939, illustrator). The Compleat Angler. London: George G. Harrap, 1931.
4° (260 x 185mm). 12 coloured plates, illustrations, after Rackham. Extra illustrated with an original ink-and-watercolour drawing by the artist, inserted opposite the limitation leaf. Full red morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe after Rackham's design, covers panelled in gilt with fish tool at each corner, spine directly lettered in two compartments, the fish tool repeated in the four others, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt (very light rubbing at extremities). Provenance: Daniel Dougal (bookplate).
ONE OF 12 DE LUXE COPIES SPECIALLY BOUND AND WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR BY RACKHAM. Number 3 of 775 copies signed by the artist. In this copy the watercolour shows Walton admiring the charms of a milkmaid. Riall records that Harrap launched the Complete Angler at a party on 24 September 1931, giving each of the fourteen guests a leather-bound copy which 'had a signed ink sketch by Rackham on the half-title page'. However, he states that Harrap were also in the habit of issuing special copies of 'the first limitation numbers' of Rackham's books. These were 'bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in green morocco' and contained 'a fine original ink and watercolour drawing, signed ... by Rackham'. Apart from being bound in red morocco rather than green, this copy fits the latter category, limited to 12 in number. For another example bound in red morocco, see Sotheby's, sale, London, 7 December 2006, lot 311. Latimore & Haskell p. 66; Riall p. 175 and pp. xiii-xvi.
