Lot Essay

In the early 1960s Morrocco painted a group of semi-abstract landscapes of Anticoli (the hill-top village near Rome where he used to stay in Italy).
'I regard some of these as being quite powerful. That was the period when the action painting movement was taking place in America. I used to look at these things by Jackson Pollock and various other people and there was a kind of vivacity about them ... the paint was loosely applied, almost accidentally ... it rather influenced me at the time. I was in Italy painting in this little village and I began to see the landscape - a very broken sort of spotty landscape around that region with great mounds of rock - in terms of that style. As a result of that I began to put the paint on with a kind of a flick, actually using liquid paint almost - I used to carry it in tins - and start the painting off by flinging a lot of paint on the canvas so that I could then work through that and get the effect I was looking for in the landscape' (C.Young and V. Keller, Alberto Morrocco 1917-1998, Edinburgh, 2008, p. 88).
