Morrocco saw Count Basie at the Caird Hall, Dundee. He painted this work from sketches he made during the performance. By 1967 Count Basie was already a giant of the music industry and perhaps the most famous Big Band leader. Basie worked with many of the leading signers of his time, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bing Crosby; he also released three albums with Frank Sinatra during the 1960s helping to promote the Big Band sound. Basie won nine Grammy awards during his lifetime including Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Big Band, and in 2011 four of his recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, a special award honouring recordings of historical significance.
