The vendors mother acquired the signature from her cousin and his friend, who lived in Friedberg, Germany, close to where Elvis was stationed during his military service. They met Elvis on the street and took the opportunity to take a photograph of him in uniform. The photograph was then developed and sent to Elvis with the request to sign it and send it back, which he did. The three chevron insignia on his uniform, which he received in February 1960, indicates his rank as Sergeant. He was discharged from active duty in March 1960.
