Lot Essay

The original composition is in the Rijksmuseum since 1808, inv. no. SK-A-22. The Battle of Scheveningen (also known as the Battle of Ter Heijde) was the decisive naval engagement of the First Anglo-Dutch war. Eventually the English navy was forced to retreat. The painting represents the battle at its height with the flagship of Marten Harpertsz. Tromp, the Brederode, locked in combat with the English flagship the Resolution commanded by Admiral Monk. (see G.S. Keyes, Mirror of Empire, 1990, pp. 98-9).
