Each boldly painted to the front with a large Valckenier coat-of-arms beneath the shaded purplish falcon crest, the sides with iron-red and gilt sprays of prunus, peony and lily, repeated on the cover, one jug broken and restored

Several members of the influential Valckenier family of Amsterdam were senior in the Dutch East India Company and ordered armorial porcelain, the leading example being Adriaan Valckenier, Governor-General of the Indies 1737-41. See C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, p. 303.
