Later half morocco, edges marbled (scuffed, rebacked.) Provenance: Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate on verso of flyleaf in volume 1).
FIRST EDITION. Pepys' famous diary remained in cipher until 1825, when it was deciphered by John Smith and edited by Lord Braybrooke. Its vivid picture of contemporary everyday life has kept it a popular source of information about late 17-century England. Grolier English 75.
