HUNTINGTON IS EAGER TO "ACT UPON THE SUBJECT OF APPOINTING COMMISSIONERS TO MEET IN THE EXPECTED CONVENTION AT PHILADELPHIA IN MAY NEXT"

"I have thought fit to convene the Council, some time past," Gov. Huntington tells his state's two delegates in Congress, "to advise whether it was necessary, or expedient to call a special Assembly, to consider & act upon the Subject of appointing Commissioners to meet in the expected Convention at Philadelphia in May next. The Council were Unanimous in the negative, supposing the Annual Session would be seasonable to appoint Commissioners, & no disadvantage would accrue by delaying the business until that period. I presume the subject will early be brot under consideration in the Session by those Gentlemen who shall then form the Assembly..." Johnson served as one of Connecticut's three delegates at the Philadelphia convention, along with Oliver Ellsworth and Roger Sherman. Mitchell served in the Connecticut ratification convention that approved the new Constitution. The Connecticut delegates were among the most active and constructive participants in the conclave. Ellsworth suggested the adoption of the term United States of America, and Sherman was crucial in fashioning the Great Compromise between large and small states over representation in the Congress.
