Lillie later collected the signatures of four other presidents as well as numerous other political, diplomatic and literary luminaries of the Civil War era, such as Andrew Johnson (beneath Lincoln's signature), as President; Ulysses S. Grant; Rutherford B. Hayes, as President; Chester A. Arthur, as President; Philip H. Sheridan; John A. Sutter (discoverer of gold in California); Alexander Stephens; Schuyler Colfax (as Speaker of the House); Thaddeus Stevens; Nathaniel P. Banks; Henry Raymond; William Evarts; William F. ("Baldy") Smith; Benjamin F. Butler; Clara Barton; Christopher ("Kit") Carson; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; Clarence King; John Sherman, and others.
