"NOT A STICK TO BE CARRIED OFF THE LAND"

WASHINGTON LISTS "4 THINGS WILL BE PARTICULARLY PROVIDED FOR" in a real estate agreement and then proceeds to enumerate six: "viz. 1. Punctual payment of the Rent. 2. A judicious managemt of the Land by a proper rotation of Crops. 3. Substitution of live in place of dead fences. 4. The utmost preservation of the Wood. Not a stick to be carried off the Land and only to be used for firing purposes of the Farm. 5. No sub-tenant will be allowed, nor no disposing of the lease without consent under hand & seal of the Landlord. 6. No land will be suffered to be cleared unless it be the Pocosins along the Ck. & River." Pocosins are wetlands that occupy poorly drained high grounds between streams and floodplains. A good example of Washington's punctilious character as farmer and land owner.
