FIRST EDITION, with the misprint 'you' for 'your' on the third line of page 13. One of the first encore performances of Sherlock Holmes since his disappearance over Reichenbach Falls in 'The Final Problem' of 1893. This literary return was described by Doyle as the 'inevitable relapse after repentance'. The story is possibly based on that of the Black Hound of Hergest, associated with the Vaughan family in Herefordshire. Locke 52; De Waal 87; Green & Gibson A26.
