The announcement of the decisive naval victory in the combined battles of Barfleur and La Hogue, the 'stupendous success' which has shattered the French fleet with 'almost incredible slaughter': 'For in the fight which began on the 19th of last month and was continued at close quarters for six hours the enemy fleet was at last put to flight and pursued for four whole days, during which time above twenty of their foremost and heaviest vessels, carrying their picked troops, were either burnt or sent to the bottom'.
