Details
HOGG, James (1770-1835), 'the Ettrick Shepherd'. Autograph manuscript, a leaf from the draft for The Shepherd's Calendar, 'Class IV. Dogs' (published in Blackwood's Magazine, February 1824), densely written on 1½ pages, large folio (377 x 240mm), laid onto paper (somewhat soiled and spotted).
Hogg's Shepherd's Calendar recreates with an unflinching lack of sentiment the world and traditions of the Ettrick Forest sheep-farming district in which he had grown up. Its chapters were published in Blackwood's over several years from 1823, and collected in book form in 1829.
