SHOSTAKOVICH, Dmitri Dmitriyevich (1906-1975). Autograph musical quotation signed (in Russian, 'D. Shostakovich'), Moscow, 15 July 1960, the first 17 bars of the 'Allegretto' from the 7th String Quartet in F sharp minor, op.108, on two systems of four staves, one page, 185 x 262mm, cut from a larger leaf (ink slightly smudged).
Shostakovich completed his 7th, and shortest, string quartet, in March 1960; it was dedicated 'In Memoriam' to his first wife, Nina, who had died suddenly of cancer in December 1954. The nervous energy evident in the opening motif of the present manuscript is characteristic of the sense of agitation which pervades the first movement: the motif reappears, reversed, in the third movement. The autograph of the quartet is apparently lost.
