PINE, John (1690-1756, engraver). The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the memorable year 1588. London: [William Bowyer for] J. Pine, 1739.
2° (560 x 415mm). Engraved title with historiated border, 10 double-page plates of sea battles printed in green surrounded by a border of medallion portraits in black, 10 maps printed in green on 5 double-page plates with historiated borders in black, double-page engraved map of the British Isles showing the track of the Armada. (Title partially detached, some mainly marginal spotting chiefly affecting the maps, some short splits to fold lines, lacking the two maps of Cornwall & Devon and the Thames as often.) Contemporary marbled boards (worn and soiled, spine lacking). Provenance: gift of 'J.W. Smith to Lord Eldon with his kind regards' (inscription at head of title; Lord Eldon's armorial label) -- 'Eldon 1839' (pencil inscription on front pastedown).
FIRST EDITION. Bowyer's records show two printings of 400 and 250 copies respectively. The 'Account of the Spanish Invasion' preceding the plates is by Philip Morant (1700-1770). Following the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, Lord Howard of Effingham, British High Admiral, had commissioned Robert Adams to produce a seris of charts representing the naval action, from which Hendrik Cornelius Vroom produced the designs for a series of tapestries. After being sold to James I, the tapestries came to furnish the House of Lords but one was stolen and lost, and the rest were burned in the fire that raged through the Palace of Westminster in 1834. Berlin Kat. 1677; Lewine p. 419.
