ALEXANDER I (1777-1825), Emperor of Russia. Letter signed ('Alexader'), to 'Baron Benigsen' [Leonty Leontevich von Bennigsen (1745-1826)], Governor General of Lithuania, and General of the Cavalry of all the Imperial Armies, St. Petersburg, 23 March 1802, in Russian, discussing the borders with Poland, one page, folio, mounted (small repairs in the gutter, light soiling).
ALEXANDER WRITES TO BENNIGSEN, who was probably active in the conspiracy that led to the assassination of Paul I, Alexander's father. Bennigsen had been opposed to Paul's policies and in 1801, following Paul's death, was appointed Governor General of Lithuania. Bennigsen had participated in the suppression of the Polish uprising in 1793, and the Russian invasion of Persia in 1796; at the Battle of Leipzig he led one of the columns that made the most decisive attacks, for which Alexander made him a Count.
