Lot Essay

This refined screen would have been placed in front of a door to block drafts and appear in paintings of eighteenth century interiors such as Boucher's La Toilette. The decoration reflects popular styles of the time, with the painted panels in the manner of Watteau and panels of grotesques that relate to drawings by Jean Bérain (d.1711). Related screens have been sold anonymously at Christie's, London, 15 June 1995, lot 42 and at Phillips, London, 18 June 1996, lot 165.
