Lot Essay

The original model by Coustou (1677-1746) was his morceau de réception at the Royal Academy on the 25th of October, 1704, and, after having been at Versailles for the entire 18th century, it entered the collections of the Louvre in 1849 (see F. Souchal, Les Frères Coustou, Paris, 1980, pl. 30).
