拍品专文

The court sculptor of King Frederick the Great in Berlin, Johann Gottfried Schadow also served as Director of the Berlin Academy. The present work shows the extreme delicacy and high finish of his draughtsmanship, a style which would be emulated and developed by his son Friedrich Wilhelm. As a work from the latter part of Schadow's career, it shows him moving away from the neoclassicism of his youth and turning towards greater naturalism in his style.

We are grateful to Dr Hinrich Sieveking for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
