Lot Essay

Despite the 1797 watermark, the present drawings appear to date from later in the artist's life.

Constable used a wide range of writing papers from many sources for both his drawings and his correspondence. Sixty-four English or Scottish paper- makers have been identified amongst his correspondance and at least thirty different English paper makers among his drawings and watercolours. To date no other papers by Glover have been identified in his letters or drawings, but it is possible that one of the Posthorn watermarks in a letter or drawing is the half sheet corresponding with the present work.
