Lot Essay

Executed a year after Callow was made a full member of the Old Water-Colour Society, the present watercolour depicts the harbour of Margate, a highly popular holiday destination for Londoners during the 19th Century. The watercolour provides a rare insight into the townscape as it was in 1849 as it was dramatically altered following a storm in 1887.
